Let’s Give Our New President-to-be a Chance, and Hope That Yes He Can

If there’s one thing that makes me optimistic about our new President-elect, it is this: clearly Barack Obama is no loser.

The first black President of the Harvard Law Review, his rise to national prominence has been swift: three terms in the Illinois state Senate, undertaken while also teaching Constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. He gave the keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in 2004, and shortly thereafter was elected to the United States Senate.

One of the things many of Obama’s critics, myself included, have been – and are – worried about is his extraordinarily left-leaning voting record in the U.S. Senate and his past associations with radicals, all of which combine to suggest he is an extreme leftist.

But it’s clear that, in addition to possessing prodigious intellect and monumental charisma, our new President is a man determined to succeed. Personally, I am hoping that his great ambition, combined with his intellect, will prompt him to forge consensus and take a moderate path, as well as take a tough stand against terrorism and in support of our allies, including Israel.

After seeing him tonight on stage, the overriding feeling he projects is one of success. Much as I and others question who he is, it is impossible not to like him. He wants to be the best. Whatever else may or not be true of him, that much is clear. And throughout his life, he has known what it takes to be a success, and he has been one, consistently. Let us support him, and hope his pragmatism serves him, and our nation, well.
