Attorneys of the World Unite
Just got word that on Tuesday, New York’s lawyers, organized by the New York City Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, and New York County Law Association, in cooperation with law schools and human rights organizations, will hold a public rally in support of Pakistan’s attorneys.
The rally will take place at 60 Center Street on November 13th at 1pm. See details here.
In the words of one young attorney who tells me her computer screen has been lighting up all day with e-mails from lawyers across the city who plan to turn out: “It’s not often that the entire legal profession – both [those] in public interest and [those] in private practice – decides to stop billing and take a stand on principle…But then again, it’s not often that a world power locks the doors of all its courts and starts arbitrarily throwing its lawyers in jail.”
Monks in Burma and lawyers in Pakistan brave incarceration and violence for their rights, and NYC attorneys are moved to stop billing clients for half an hour …could it be that democracy is in the air?
